Technique
Martha Zappe is
one of the few artists who makes "hand pulled" or "art prints". This
means that the prints are not produced through photographic or
computerized methods, but created on a hand-made metal plate by the
artist. The plate is then inked and put through a press with a special
print paper. Zappe makes very few prints from each plate, usually from
five to fifteen, making her prints more unique and valuable.
Printmaker
Born
and raised in Germany, Martha Zappe lived many years in France before
coming to the United States in 1964. In New York she studied painting
with S.B. Carter and Clifford Jackson. In 1982 she studied printmaking
with P. Schwarzchild at the University of New York at Purchase. There
she studied the techniques of preparing the metal plate for etching,
aquatint and drypoint processes. After moving to California in 1983
Zappe studied lithography at West Valley College under Pat Sherwood.
